Started by the late South Australian hieromonk Nectarios (Kellis) in 1994, the Orthodox missionary work in Madagascar has spread amongst the local population. By 1999, there were more than 12,000 Orthodox Christians and many others preparing to be christened.

In the country’s capital of Antananarivo, the Church of the Assumption of Mary was built, together with eparchial directorate and an orphanage for several hundred children. Orthodoxy has been so well taken up by the locals that there are many native priests and bishops of Madagascar.

Today, there are dozens of parishes, several schools including many projects designed to improve the health and education of the locals.
